The Impact of a Morning Routine (or lack there of…)
I love mornings. Waking up to the sounds of the birds singing outside my bedroom window, hmmm…
I don’t like waking up to the sounds of the kids yelling at each other. Or finding out that I missed my alarm clock… Again!
How you start your day, or more specifically how you spend those first few morning hours has a big impact on the rest of it. It sets the tone for your entire day.
That’s why making over your morning is so important. It’s about so much more than those first few hours.
Having a morning routine ensures I wake up to the sounds of the birds (because the kids are still asleep) and I know what to do and when to do it.
No more guessing means no more stressing!
Let’s tell a tale of two mornings
Let’s take the day after the Super Bowl. Your team won and there was a great after party at your neighbors. All the kids playing in the basement so you didn’t realize until too late it was half past nine and already a full hour past there bed time.
On Monday morning you just can’t make yourself get up. You hit the snooze button multiple times, and when you finally turn the alarm off there’s only a quarter of an hour to get dressed, breakfast and run to the buss stop.
Tell me, what are the odds the kids pack there gym clothes? Or the library books due today?
Now, I don’t know about you but I much prefer something like this…
You set an early alarm to make sure you have time for exercise, meditation, or simply some much needed “me time”. You get up when the alarm chimes and go for that walk, do your meditation exercise, or read a book for twenty minutes.
Sounds like bliss to you? Me too!
Now, this does imply that I set my alarm before the kids wake up and I’m not always prepared to do that. Some days I just need my sleep more than I need my “me time”, but those are the days when my morning routine kicks in.
But the advantage doesn’t stop there
Think about how the rest of those days went. Did you notice a difference in how you felt? How much did you get done on the mornings when you got up with your first alarm? Were you able to do all the things you set out to do? How did those days compare to the ones when you hit the snooze button over and over again?
If I had to take a guess, I’d say that the mornings when you got up as soon as the alarm went off went a lot smoother. I bet you accomplished what you have planned to do, too.
This one tip is all you need!
Now I talk more about creating an effective morning routine here and here.
But in a nutshell, the best first step for you to take is setting your alarm and putting it at the other end of the room!
Now I know it’s a bit drastic but hear me out:
When you start your day, start it. This way you train your brain to just kick into gear and start your day automagically.
When you hit snooze on the other hand, you train your brain waking up is no biggie, you can do it later .
Which ends in lost track shoes and forgotten lunch packs.
Ask me how I know…
So the best tip to create your own miracle mornings: When the alarm goes, You go too!
You don’t need to set your alarm earlier or start your day meditating to the sounds of Himalayan Mountain Birds just yet.
Just start your day. Period!
Maybe you’re ready to Really make a difference…
